Vintage Japanese Novelties

This category is a catch-all for some of the (usually) small oddities of Japanese toys. Many of my favorite colorful tin and paper collections will be found here. Needless to say they are all vintage and original. When I am not sure where to list it there is usually a place in Novelties.

CONDITION-PHOTOS-REFUNDS

Read the description carefully as information about condition, working order, size, materials of construction, vintage and my personal opinions and observations will be mentioned there. Sometimes I have a small quantity of an item but usually they are one of a kind.

As far as the photos are concerned, I include views from all angles (if applicable), try to focus on any defects and generally let you see the toy as if you were inspecting it in person. That said, sometimes photos make things look better and sometimes worse. When a picture of a small item is blown up to a large size all kinds of defects seem to jump out at you...like looking at your skin in a magnifying mirror. The actual item seen by the naked eye, especially our aging eyes, often looks better than the photo.

Your satisfaction is always important to me. If you are unhappy about the condition of a toy you get I am happy to give a full refund or exchange it if that is possible. Things do get past my notice sometimes (those aging eyes).

Early 1950's Japanese Cash Register Bank in Original Box

4.5 inches (11.5 cm) tall

EX in box

This early 1950's Japanese bank is one of the better examples of over the top litho design. Besides the cash register buttons and the window that shows the cash totals, the surface is decorated with a riot of flowers , bugs, birds and butterflies. The back sports a large basket of flowers and each side shows a different scene of a child operating the bank...a boy on one side, a girl on the other. A painted pink knob (some chips in the paint) on one side can be manually turned to change the number in the window that keeps track of deposits from 10 to 100. When you press the key on the front, the bottom drawer springs open so you can get the money. The box's paper label top has some tears on the side edges. The label showing a blond girl wearing an eyeshade while working the cash register is intact and wonderful.

Early 1950's Japanese Tin Child Clock Bank in Original Box

8 inches (20.4 cm) tall

EX in box

This is an example of a toy that is unused, never sold to or handled by a child and is complete in the original box with all inserts. This wonderful mechanical bank winds up and has a pendulum on the back that moves back and forth as the hands of the clock turn. The celluloid parrots on their perches alongside the clock tower rock forward and back as a bell sounds. Money that is dropped in the slot on the lower right tower can be retrieved by unlocking the door at the bottom of the tower under the sign that says Time Is Money. Wonderful detailed litho and vibrant colors on both toy and box. This toy is in excellent condition in the original box.

Tin Japanese Junior Dial Toy Scale

2 inches ( 5 cm) wide , 4.25 inches (10.7 cm) tall and deep

Good Plus

This Japanese tin toy scale actually works but there is no guarantee of acuracy.. On each side is an image of a bear weighing his stuff....honey on one side and fish on the other. The side where he is weighing the honey seems to show him using a different scale. There is some factory touch-up in the red areas and light spidering in the litho in a few spots. The tray on top also shows some discoloration. Made in Japan.

1950's Japanese Toy Kitchen Scale in Box

3.75 inches (9.5 cm) tall, 2.5 inches (6.3 cm) wide, 3.75 inches (9.5 cm) deep

EX in Box

The early 1950's tin toy scales that were manufactured in Japan are amazingly colorful and covered with detailed litho designs. They are almost all pretty rare and hard to find. I am not sure how accurate that they are but when items are placed on the scale, the needle on the dial moves to indicate the weight. Sometimes the measurement is in ounces, other times it is grams. This scale will measure up to 10 ounces. I have seen this particular scale in an Occupied Japan version, measuring in grams.

This example is in excellent condition in the original box. The colors are bright and the surface is shiny except for the tray which has a dull surface. One side edge of the box lid is missing and someone has written $2.00 in red marker across the top edge of the lid.

1950's Japanese Gangu Hakari - Toy's Weighing Machine in Box

I am not sure how accurate that they are but when items are placed on the scale, the needle on the dial moves to indicate the weight. Sometimes the measurement is in ounces, other times it is grams. This scale measures up to 200 grams.

The colors are bright but the overall surface has a slight roughness that is easier to feel than see (stored under poor conditions). The colorful box is in like-new condition. Birds decorate the sides, including a demented looking parrot who appears to be pulling a cart with a doll (seen on the back of the scale). Colorful and detailed fruits and vegetables are on the tray. Toy is Good Plus condition, box is excellent.

1950's Japanese Weight of Toy Kitchen Scale

I am not sure how accurate that they are but when items are placed on the scale, the needle on the dial moves to indicate the weight. Sometimes the measurement is in ounces, other times it is grams.

This very clean and bright toy scale says Weight of Toy on the front of the dial. The dial has a plastic cover instead of the usual glass. Along with the usual fruits and vegetables on the tray, one side shows a girl using the scale to weigh a variety of foods, the other shows a boy in a kimono surrounded by assorted sea food. On the back a boy and girl are seen shopping at a market picking up fruits and vegetables to weigh on their scale. Condition is excellent.

1950's Japanese Weight of Toy Scale with Bell

4.25 inches (10.7 cm) tall, 3.25 inches (8.3 cm) wide, 4.5 inches (11.5 cm) deep

VG

The early 1950's tin toy scales that were manufactured in Japan are amazingly colorful and covered with detailed litho designs. They are almost all pretty rare and hard to find. I am not sure how accurate that they are but when items are placed on the scale, the needle on the dial moves to indicate the weight. Sometimes the measurement is in ounces, other times it is grams. I believe this one is in grams. When the scale's tray is depressed a bell sounds.

The dial face says Weight of Toy. The metal rim around the dial has darkened with age and there are some small scratches in the litho. Along with the fruits and vegetables on the tray, a happy pig and rabbit are on opposite sides of the scale with a hen and chicks on the back. The usual riot of flower designs and butterflies surrounds them and the base has a red checked tablecloth pattern. Overall condition is very good.

1950's Japanese Tin Toy Kitchen Scale with Bell

5.5 inches (14 cm) tall 4.5 inches (11.5 cm) wide, 5.5 inches (14 cm) deep

VG

The early 1950's tin toy scales that were manufactured in Japan are amazingly colorful and covered with detailed litho designs. They are almost all pretty rare and hard to find. I am not sure how accurate that they are but when items are placed on the scale, the needle on the dial moves to indicate the weight. Sometimes the measurement is in ounces, other times it is grams. This scale seems to show both. When the scale's tray is depressed a bell sounds.

This is the largest toy scale I have seen. The metal ring around the dial has darkened with age and the body shows some scratches. Along with the fruits and vegetables on the tray, a strange collection of images decorates the body of the scale. Some are foods but the parrot, birds, lamb or goat and puppy are not . Well, maybe the lamb but not as it is seen, all cute and big-eyed...and surely not the puppy! Overall condition is very good.

1950's Japanese Tin Kitchen Scale with Seahorses

5.5 inches (14 cm) tall and wide

EX

The early 1950's tin toy scales that were manufactured in Japan are amazingly colorful and covered with detailed litho designs. They are almost all pretty rare and hard to find. I am not sure how accurate that they are but when items are placed on the scale, the needle on the dial moves to indicate the weight. Sometimes the measurement is in ounces, other times it is grams. This scale does not specify.

It is styled after a general store counter top scale. Litho images of fruits and vegetables are seen on the tray. The base is decorated with flowers. The upright dial is decorated with seahorses and fish. Just under the measurement window on the dial is a smaller window showing three striped fish. In tiny letters on the base under the tray are the words Weight of Toys. Condition is excellent with some small amount of wear on the top edges.

1950's Japanese Tin Toy Magic Telephone-Girl on Dial

7 inches (17.7 cm) wide , 4 inches (10.3 cm) tall

Good Plus

The early 1950's tin Japanese telephones are usually very colorful and over-decorated with birds, flowers, butterflies, comic animals, people on the telephone etc.

This tin telephone might be part of a set. There is no celluloid cord between phone and reciever but the hole left for it is large and would actually take a celluloid tube. Like that would help you be heard on the other phone in the set...sort of like how the toy telescope makes things look sooo much larger. Not. This phone has a girl talking on a phone on the dial. The image is faded. Dialing the number does cause a bell to ring. The words Magic Telephone are on both sides and two terrier-type dogs and the word Hello are on the back. There are some chips in the paint on the reciever and a spot of white discoloration on one side of the body of the phone. The plate behind the dial that has the numbers on it is lightly spotted with rust. Overall condition is Good Plus.

The early 1950's tin Japanese telephones are usually very colorful and over-decorated with birds, flowers, butterflies, comic animals, people on the telephone etc. The litho on this telephone is a color variation of both the cash box bank phone and the boxed Children's Telephone. A Bo Peep type doll is on the dial and the sides and back show various toys and dolls along with decorative flowers. The colors are faded, especially the background, flowers and the red base edge. The dial moves but the bell sound is not working. I can hear something rattling inside. The painted reciever and dial have some chips in the paint. Overall condition is only good.

Early Japanese Tin Bowl-Two Circling Koi Fish

5.75 inches (14.8 cm) in diameter

The artwork on these tin plates or shallow bowls is marvelous. I collected them with my sand toys because of the fish themes. These Japanese tin plates are too large to be doll house dishes and I have never found a set of dishes, just the seperate bowls and plates. This example is 5.75 inches in diameter and 1 inch deep. The center of the plate has a very sophisticated design image of two Koi fish or red goldfish ( a very popular Japanese image). The edge has a yellow scallop design. This bowl is marked IMAKITA KINZOKU K.K., probably the manufacturer. I feel these were made for the domestic Japanese market, possibly just before the war. Condition is excellent.

This large bowl is 7 inches in diameter and 1.5 inches deep. Three fish are swimming in the water among the water plants. The edge has a blue scalloped design.. The small ridges that were created in the metal when the dish was pressed into shape have lost litho and there are a few flakes in the surface too. Condition is Very Good .

1950's Vintage Tin Cowboy Telescope on Card

Card is 6 x 3 inches

EX

This all tin telescope comes on the original card. The card has wonderful litho of a cowboy on his rearing horse using the telescope to observe an Indian chief standing near a log cabin. The telescope, like most toys of its kind, does not do much. It does expand its own size when you pull it out ( up to 4.5 inches) but that does not seem to affect the size of anything you might view through it. The colorful litho on the telescope shows the cowboy squinting through the scope. Condition is excellent (the card might have some tears where the wire anchoring the telescope is attached).

Pre-War Japanese Blocks in Box

Box is 8 inches (25 cm) square

EX in box

I am not sure of the purpose of this boxed set of paper litho on wood blocks. It could be an educational toy. The blocks are much shallower than the usual blocks and the paper litho is applied to one side only. Each block is roughly 1.5 inches square and 3/8 inches deep. On the back is a printed image of the Japanese character seen on the front left corner of the front of the block. I assume that the image, Japapaper.htmnese character and English word on the front are all related. There are fifty blocks in all.

The detailed and colorful printed litho on the blocks is absolutely beautiful. Images range from animals, fruits, and flowers to vintage vehicles and everyday household objects. Condition is excellent in the original box. These were never played with as far as I can tell.

Fabulous 1950's Japanese Tin Top-Scooter, Motorcycle, Racer, Jet and Train

EX

I thought this 1950's tin Japanese top was the most wonderful thing I had ever seen until I got a larger one with the same images. This top has everything you would want in a 1950's Japanese toy. First of all the colors are quintessential 50's : the turquoise blue, red, orange-yellow, cream, pink and green (the green is not as lime-green as usual). The images are also first rate 50's...the #8 Racer with driver, the scooter with girl driving and small boy on the back, jet plane with pilot, steam train and man on motorcycle. The only thing missing is a trolley or some comic animal heads. The colors are vibrant and the surface is shiny. The top works well. When it is spinning you hear a low humming sound. There are some shallow dents on the silver bottom of the top. Condition is excellent.

Thsi 1950's Japanese tin top comes in the original but plain and uninteresting box. This top is the twist the top winder and then release variety. It works well and is in excellent condition. The decorative elements on the colorful red, green ,and yellow striped background include clowns, a lion head, circus elephant on ball, giraffe, monkey, cowboy on horse and a penguin. I'm not sure how that penguin got in there, although the cowboy is out of his element too.

Thankfully no small child ever put this boat in water. Condition is excellent. The flag for Great Britain is on this boat with a predominantly red deck.

Japanese Monsters Yo Yo Puzzle

1 and 7/8 inch (4.8 cm) diameter

EX-Unused-Original Packaging

This interesting toy is a combination of a yo yo and dexterity puzzle. Made in Japan for the Japanese market, the toy still has the original card and blister pack plastic packaging. The toy is in excellent, unused condition.

One side of the tin yo yo has great image of a Godzilla-like monster fighting with a scaley blue monster. The other side of the yo yo is a dexterity puzzle (tin sides with acetate window) with an image of a long-necked dragon-like monster. You have to place two pink beads in the spaces where his eyes are.

The original card is 3 and 5/8 inches (9cm) wide and 5.25 inches (13.3 cm) tall. The same two monsters are seen at the top of the card, battling it out. The blister pack that covers the yo yo is dirty with bent edges and has been opened.

I am not good with yo yos but it seems to work OK.
