CONDITION-PHOTOS-REFUNDS

Read the description carefully as information about condition, working order, size, materials of construction, vintage and my personal opinions and observations will be mentioned there. Sometimes I have a small quantity of an item but usually they are one of a kind.

As far as the photos are concerned, I include views from all angles (if applicable), try to focus on any defects and generally let you see the toy as if you were inspecting it in person. That said, sometimes photos make things look better and sometimes worse. When a picture of a small item is blown up to a large size all kinds of defects seem to jump out at you...like looking at your skin in a magnifying mirror. The actual item seen by the naked eye, especially our aging eyes, often looks better than the photo.

Your satisfaction is always important to me. If you are unhappy about the condition of a toy you get I am happy to give a full refund or exchange it if that is possible. Things do get past my notice sometimes (those aging eyes).

1950's Japanese Tin Speedboat Watering Can

4.75 inches (12 cm) long 2.75 inches (7 cm ) wide

VG to Ex

The Japanese often turned other toys into watering cans, so you will find fish watering cans and this speedboat watering can. There are lots of details on this tin speedboat and the colors are bright. Some of the paint on the spout is worn away, likewise a bit on the bottom of the boat but generally it is in excellent condition. The inside does feel a bit rough, as if some child actually put water in it. What were they thinking?? I'll have to downgrade a bit.

Pre-War Japanese Sand Pail-Japanese Family

4.5 inches ( 11.5 cm) tall, top diameter is 5.5 inches (14 cm), base diameter is 4.25 inches (10.8 cm), handle adds 3.25 inches

EX

The earliest pre-war Japanese pails are recognizable by their use of gold colored litho often as an outline or as part of the patterns. You will also see this gold coloring on the early pre-war tin whistles. These pails were probably produced for their domestic market. The themes are distinctly Japanese. Here we see a Japanese family. The women are in traditional dress while the boy appears to be wearing more Western dress, possibly a school uniform. The gold tone inside the pail and on the handle has become mottled with age. It is not rust but it is some kind of breakdown of the coating. There is a slight dent and a couple of spots and scratches none of which jump out at you. Still I would consider this pail to be in excellent condition.

Pre-War Japanese Tin Sand Pail - Geisha with Children

6.5 inches ( 16.5 cm ) tall ,top diameter is 6.5 inches (16.5 cm), base diameter is 4.75 inches (12.3 cm) , handle adds 4 and 3/8 inches

VG

This is the largest sand pail in my collection. It has the same gold outlining and interior color as my other early Japanese pail. Both date from the early 1930's and both depict Japanese families. This pail has what I call a geisha, due to her hairstyle and dress, along with a boy in a pith helmet and sailor suit and a girl in a kimono. Large flowers decorate the foreground. Interestingly I did find a registered trademark and the words Made in Japan on this pail. Condition is not as good on this pail. There are more scratches and spots of wear and even some spots of rust. The interior of the pail and the handle shows the same age mottling and discoloration. It is still very presentable.

Japanese Tin Sand Pail-Cooking Fish

4.25 inches (10.8 cm) tall, top diameter is 5.75 inches (14.5 cm), base diameter is 4 inches (10.1 cm), the handle adds 3.25 inches

Good Plus

I am not sure of the date this pail might have been manufactured. The handles are different from the early 1930's pails, they are attached with rivets like the 1950's vintage pails. The images and themes are distinctly Japanese, pointing to manufacture for the Japanese market. Two girls, one in a kimono the other in a Western style dress are playing with their cooking set while a boy offers them some fish and an octopus. The litho colors are reminiscent of the early 50's colors but somewhat darker or richer in hue. It is possible these pails were made just before the war.

Condition on this pail is Good Plus due to numerous small scrapes and chips in the litho surface. and some small spots of rust on the inside bottom of the pail.

Japanese Tin Sand Pail-Samaurai Fighting Oni

4.5 inches (11.5 cm) tall, top diameter is 5.5 inches (14 cm), base diameter is 4.25 inches (10.3 cm), the handle adds 3.25 inches

VG

I am not sure of the date these pails might have been manufactured. The handles are different from the early 1930's pails, they are attached with rivets like the 1950's vintage pails. The images and themes are distinctly Japanese, pointing to manufacture for the Japanese market. A Samaurai is wrestling with an Oni (ogre or giant) on one side of the pail while on the other side he offers food to some warrior animals. There is a myth or story going on here with which I am not familiar. The litho colors are reminiscent of the early 50's colors but somewhat darker or richer in hue. It is possible these pails were made just before the war.

Condition on this pail is very good. There are a couple of chips in the litho and a few areas of discoloration. There is slight roughness on the inside bottom of the pail and on the handle.

Japanese Tin Baby Queen Boat in Box

6.25 inches (15.5 cm) long

Good Plus in Box

This non-mechanical tin 1950's Japanese speedboat with driver has lots of litho details and comes in the original box with the original flag. This flag has a tall pole. A bit of the pattern on the soft thin vinyl flag has transfered to the deck of the boat and there is fading to the red color of the litho. Condition, taking all this into account is Good Plus. The box with colorful paper label is in excellent condition.

EX

This colorful 1950's tin Japanese sand pail has the same traditional beach scene on both sides. Children are seen swimming in the water. One lucky boy rides on a floating pelican . Happy singing birds fill the sky. The inside bottom of the pail has darkened with age but otherwise condition is excellent.

Japanese Tin Sand Pail-Samaurai Fighting Red Devil

3.5 inches (8.3 cm) tall, top diameter 4.5 inches (10.8 cm), base diameter 3.25 inches (8.2 cm), the handle adds 2.75 inches

This Japanese tin sand pail has a traditional Japanese scene of a Samaurai defeating a red devil-like creature while a woman in traditional dress looks on. The same scene is on both sides. This was probably produced for the domestic Japanese market, possibly just before the war. The handle has darkened with age and there is a short line of corrosion on the interior of the pail but condition would still be considered excellent.

Early Japanese Tin Bowl-Two Circling Koi Fish

5.75 inches (14.8 cm) in diameter

EX

The artwork on these tin plates or shallow bowls is marvelous. I collected them with my sand toys because of the fish themes. These Japanese tin plates are too large to be doll house dishes and I have never found a set of dishes, just the seperate bowls and plates. This example is 5.75 inches in diameter and 1 inch deep. The center of the plate has a very sophisticated design image of two Koi fish or red goldfish ( a very popular Japanese image). The edge has a yellow scallop design. This bowl is marked IMAKITA KINZOKU K.K., probably the manufacturer. I feel these were made for the domestic Japanese market, possibly just before the war. Condition is excellent.

NH-33

$55.

Japanese Tin Bowl-Divers and Angel Fish

8.75 inches (22.3 cm) in diameter

VG

The artwork on these tin plates or shallow bowls is marvelous. I collected them with my sand toys because of the fish themes. These Japanese tin plates are too large to be doll house dishes and I have never found a set of dishes, just the seperate bowls and plates. This large bowl is 8.75 inches in diameter and 1.75 inches deep. This tin litho has a silver background. I believe it is a bit later in manufacture, possibly 1960's. An angel fish and other colorful fish and sea life are seen in the center and along the sides Two scuba divers are also swimming with them. Some of the silver areas in the litho are darkened with age and there ae some shallow dents along the curved bottom. Condition is very good overall. The bowl is not marked and might have been produced for the Japanese market.

Japanese Tin Fish Watering Can

6 inches (15.3 cm) long and 3.75 inches (9.5 cm) wide

EX

Even though this tin Japanese watering can shaped like a fish has the same embossing and litho designs and colors as early 50's cans I think this is a later example, possibly late 1960's or evenearly 70's vintage. It is marked Made in Japan. Condition is excellent. I have a small quantity of this toy.

ST-24

$12.

1950's Japanese Tin Bowl-Fish and Man on Turtle

5.5 inches (14 cm) in diameter

Fair

The artwork on these tin plates or shallow bowls is marvelous. I collected them with my sand toys because of the fish themes. These Japanese tin plates are too large to be doll house dishes and I have never found a set of dishes, just the seperate bowls and plates. This small bowl is 5.5 inches in diameter and 1 and 1/8 inches deep. A fat Koi fish is seen in the center and around the sides are fish and water plants with a man riding a sea turtle, a pagoda and an octopus. The sea turtle with rider is an image that shows up on more than one Japanese item. Condition is only fair due to litho loss along the rim and severe litho loss and corrosion on the bottom.

1950's Japanese Tin Funnel-Kids, Train, Helicopter

4 and 1/8 inches (10.5 cm) in diameter

This tin Japanese funnel goes well with the water pumps and other sand toys. In fact, the scene shows two Japanese children playing with a water pump, pail and sand toy. In the background a train is leaving a tunnel and a helicopter flies overhead. There is a gold undertone to the litho and I might be inclined to think this toy was pre-war except for that helicopter. Condition is very good. There is some darkening and wear to the underside and a thumb size dent along one side just below the edge.

ST-25

$55.

1960's Japanese Tin Fish Rattle

3.25 inches (8.3 cm) long

EX

This tin fish rattle is of later manufacture than most of the ones in my collection. The patterns of lithography are similar but there is very little embossing and the fish is not as three dimensional as the earlier ones. The shape is also simpler. This fish rattle is marked Made in Japan, which many earlier ones are not. It actually has an original price sticker (69 cents) from Klein and Trumbley Toy and Game Company on the bottom. Condition is excellent.

$10.

Japanese Tin Disney Snow White Sand Pail

3 inches (7.6 cm) tall, top diameter 4.75 inches (12 cm) base diameter 3 inches (7.6 cm), handle adds 2.25 inches

Good

This is one of only two Disney theme pails in my collection of Japanese sand pails, mostly because they did not produce that many. Probably they were not licensed to do so. This pail has Snow White and six dwarfs (I am not sure who is missing) on both sides. The litho style indicates a 1960's vintage. The pail is marked Made in Japan. One side is in pretty nice shape, the other has rust spots and litho loss right on Snow White's face. Overall condition is good.

1950's Japanese TinyTin Water Pump

4.25 inches (10.5 cm) tall

A monkey wearing blue overalls and a perky yellow hat is shown placing the pump in a pan of water and squirting the pig (attired in shorts. shirt and cap) in the face. Now, I am not placing this pump in a pan of water so we don't know if it still works. Condition is excellent even so.

Very Large Tin Japanese Pail- Pigs South of the Border

Body 5 and 3/8 inches (13.5 cm) tall

handle adds 4.5 inches

top diameter 8.25 inches (21 cm)

Good

The images on this large Japanese tin pail might be said to be the three pigs.....but only if they were coming from south of the border. There are three pigs pictured on this pail but one is dressed as a matador, another as a Mexican peasant complete with sombrero and only the third one is dressed in overalls and a cap and could be a bricklayer.

This Japanese pail has an unusual top diameter to bottom proportion and the handle is not attached with the usual rivets.

Condition is good with bright litho colors. The shiny surface has suffered the dings of age and play wear. The inside bottom of the pail shows some spots of rust.

This vintage Japanese sand toy set is still in the original box. The colorful paper label on the front says Suna Asobi and shows three children playing with their sand toys.

The box has a lot of damage: missing pieces aand edges of the lid, peeling paper, creases along the bottom of the box and separations along the edges. Age has taken its toll.

Early Japanese Tin Sand Pail-Old Man and Boy in Traditional Dress

3.5 inches (9 cm) tall

handle adds 2.5 inches

VG

This colorful and attractive Japanese pail could be pre-war or early 1950's. It is decorated with an image of a long nosed old man holding a scroll and a plant-like fan. He is gesturing at a boy, also in traditional dress, who appears to be jumping and possibly brandishing a sword (or a baguette....hard to tell as the image is cut off at the top of the pail). I would go with the sword. The scene has the look of a Japanese myth or story.

The base of the pail has a koi fish shaped depression useful for pressing into wet sand. Condition is very good. The surface has a bit of age texture that you can feel more than see and some minor wear along the inside top edge. The inside bottom is slightly textured and lightly age darkened and there are some small spots of light rust on the plain metal handle.

ST-42

Large Japanese Tin Speedboat Watering Can

Water goes in a hole under the handle and the front of the boat has eleven smalll holes for it to sprinkle out. Colors are bright and the surface is shiny. There are a few wear marks and some age related darkening on the plain metal bottom but it does not look like any child put water in this can.
