Condition is mostly concerned with the face of the whistle, although any problems on the back surface will be mentioned. As far as the photos are concerned, please keep in mind that these are small items and when a picture is blown up to a large size all kinds of defects seem to jump out at you...like looking at your skin in a magnifying mirror. The actual item seen by the naked eye, especially our aging eyes, looks better than the photo. Your satisfaction is always important to me. If you are unhappy about the condition of a whistle you get I am happy to give a full refund or exchange it if that is possible. Things do get past my notice sometimes (those aging eyes). |

This uncommon pre-war Japanese tin whistle is in the shape of a fat bug. Lots of litho detail on a gold tone background. The whistle makes a warbling sound. There is wear on the raised edges of the wings and some tiny chips and scratches in the overall litho. The back has darkened with age. |

This pre-war Japan tin flute type whistle is 4.5 inches (11.5 cm) tall. There are two distinct categories of litho on the whistle : sports and military. A mean looking bulldog head is seen at the top then below that a boy holding a large ball (Rugby?). On the lower part of the flute are three images of a military nature : a cannon, a camouflaged vehicle with roof mounted gun and a motorcycle with sidecar. The whistle is in good condition with some wear and small dents. The back is darkened and shows a small bit of corrosion. The musical qualities are poor. You can get a single weak tone that varies slightly as you cover the different holes with your fingers. |

This colorful pre-war Japanese tin litho whistle is 2.75 inches (7 cm) tall. The image is of city buildings with a bi-plane flying above them. This is the flat version of this image. It still has two tubes and a double tone but the tubes are not raised on the front. The whistle sound is a little weak. The whistle is in excellent condition. Some darkening has occured on the back side. |

This pre-war Japan tin flute type whistle is 5.5 inches (14 cm) tall. The stylized graphic image shows a long tailed bird sitting on a branch. The bird looks remarkably like a chicken (except for the tail). The whistle has bright colors, a shiny surface and is in excellent condition. The musical qualities are limited but if you are skilled, a few different notes can be produced. |

The gold tone back of the whistle has a few dark spots. It makes a shrill whistle sound. |

The good guy cowboy is easily recognized by the lack of a sinister sneer and mustache and the open and innocent look on his face. True he is holding two guns and they are pointed right at you but he is probably defending a damsel in distress. The whistle is in excellent condition with bright colors and only minor scratches. This 1950’s vintage Japanese whistle is one of the more uncommon ones. It has a double tone and is in the shape of a Y. A colorfully dressed clown juggling knives is on the lower part of the Y and the upper arms show two girl acrobats balancing on a bar above the clown’s head. There are loads of details including musical notes, red and blue bubbles and a weird dressed mouse centered between the girls on the bar. The whistle is 2.5 inches (6.4 cm) tall and 1.75 inches (4.5 cm) at the widest point. This is not an easy whistle to find. When I had an opportunity to get a small group of them I did not hesitate, despite their less than perfect condition. The colors are muted and the surface is not shiny. Some of this is due storage conditions and to wear and tear. The top surface shows light scratches and wear. The back surface has darkened with age and shows some light rust spots. I had not tried to polish or clean these whistles when I took the photos so in the interests of science I applied some Meguiar’s cleaner-wax to them with Q-tips and terry cloth. A lot of dirt was removed and they did get pretty shiny but most of the scratches remained, thus the good plus condition rating. |

This has always been one of my favorite Japanese post war histles. A colorful scene shows four animals out in a canoe. The dog and rabbit are doing the paddling while a cat waves merrily and a pig, leanimg on the rabbit and impeding her paddling work, takes a snooze in the back of the boat. The words Animal Boat are on the mouthpiece. The whistle has a pleasant tone. Condition is very good with bright colors and a shiny surface. The plain metal back has darkened a bit with age. |
